The first and most obvious profession is as a performer. A working musician or vocalist can find work in a number of places. Bars, nightclubs, lounges, cafes, are all great places to start and get noticed. Being assertive in order to find gigs is the biggest factor for finding regular jobs. Another option is to find open mic shows in your area. Playing in front of a crowd is always a great way to gain experience, meet other musicians in the area, and network with other people in your sector of business. Less traditional places to look into performing at are, holiday parties, company functions, music stores, star hotels, cruise liners, grand openings, etc. Keep in mind that each performance is somewhat of an audition. If you have this mentality then you will be on your way to the next level. Opportunities are everywhere, you just need to be bold and find them. As with most things, there is an inherent risk of not finding what you’re looking for. However if you do not put yourself out there looking for it, then there is almost no chance of finding it.
Another avenue for performers is as a disc jockey. There is a great demand for a
disc jockey in my local area, which means that demand could be present near you too. DJ’ing is a fun way to get paid by playing music. Networking is another benefit as a disc jockey that can introduce you to the people you aim to meet. As with the performing musician, assertiveness is a must in order to find gigs. Of course you will need to invest in equipment, and be familiar with a large selection of music, but if you love listening to music then you will find their to be very little work involved in being a Disc Jockey. The bottom-line for becoming a DJ; the money is good, the job is fun, and the schedule is flexible to your needs.
The need for business’ to change their marketing strategies demands creativity. This is where you can fit in. Most commercials for tv and radio have adopted music. Whether it is in the background or a customized jingle that is made to promote the company, marketers have found that music stimulates the attention of the consumer. Be creative that is what you do right! Don’t be hesitant; businesses may just be looking for the song that you wrote about them.
If you sincerely enjoy helping others develop their musical talent, being a music teacher might be something that suites you. This is a truly invaluable profession, and doesn’t require a college degree or certificate. What is required is the desire to teach, and the exceptional skills you have developed with your instrument. Guiding someone towards reaching their potential is a wonderful feeling and reward in this craft. A decent wage is also garnished with this profession.
If you are passionate about music production and the
recording studio, help people make their own albums. There are a number of ways to be involved in making a record. The producer is the manager of the studio. He oversees the development of the record from tracking to mastering. He must be good with people and have experience with recording music and artists. The engineer primarily runs the mixing board and tweaks the levels of each track. This field requires the most technical knowledge of anyone in the studio. Keep in mind you don’t become a producer or sound engineer overnight. Nor, do you apply for these jobs as you would at a Mcdonalds. Traditionally you will start as a helper of some degree, adjusting mic levels, cleaning up, and soaking up the process and how to’s of what is going on. You can also begin to gain experience at home by building a home recording studio. Using music software and your pc, there are many inexpensive ways to make
digital music recordings.
Music is a large career field full of possibilities. If creating music is your passion, but you don’t think it is realistic to aspire to be the next big pop star, be creative and look into non-traditional ways to make it a career. Good luck!
