The Music DJ:

Despite what your parents and other’s may already believe about being a disc jockey, it can actually be a great job with many benefits, and significant income potential. If music is a passion of yours, and you can develop a relationship with crowds, becoming a DJ might be something to consider. Take a look at the benefits and additional opportunities for being a music DJ.

Benefit 1: Keep your day job. You are flexible in the hours you work. Schedule yourself an evening or two a week to test the waters at first. You can DJ during the night-time as often as you can manage. The income can be supplemental, or if you find you enjoy it better than your day job, you can look into finding more gigs to fill a full-time work schedule. Full or part time, you will be able to end the day on a musical note.

Benefit 2: Great pay, with very little “work” required on your part. If you’re passionate about music, playing good music in professional sonic quality should be no problem for you.

Benefit 3: Total creative freedom. Being a DJ allows you space and free time to manage your gigs, and build a working routine that accommodates your lifestyle. DJ’ing is nice quick cash. It is very common for a DJ to make money - cash in hand at the end of a night. This will facilitate steady - money streaming in, and give you the opportunity to try new things.

Benefit 4: Wherever your gigs are held, people are glad you are there. In result, you will be getting tons of complimentary drinks and tasty treats. So keep the good music flowing.

If DJ’ing sounds like something you might be interested in trying. You can start by building a large collection of diverse music. You can be partial to your favorite type of music, but when you are dj’ing, you will be expected to have a wide variety of music to suit many types of people. So a good tip is to get your hands on as much music as you can.

You will need to determine what your specialty is. House, trance, hip-hop, funk etc. are all different categories. Further, the area you choose will determine the types of gigs you will best be suited for.

Now for the tools you are going to need. DJ’s today go a number of different routes when putting their setup together. Analog decks spinning vinyl records is considered to be the “old school” setup. This consists of at least two hardware decks, a cross-fader, crates of records, and of course a good speaker system. Still commonly used today, this rig is the traditional DJ setup.

With the recent surge in digital music technology, less expensive methods are available. Today a DJ can setup his laptop with a massive collection of digital audio stored onto the hard-disc, hook it up to speakers, and whala. Good music software in this case is a must. There are many virtual DJ software applications that can be used to tweak and remix your music collection.

The final factors to consider is the type of DJ you will be. Namely what events you will be catering to. Mobile DJs play for various events such as high school reunions, parties, socials, proms, weddings, private parties etc. They often use digital music recordings, such as MP3, midi file etc. on compact discs, or in MP3 compatible devices such as an iPod. In this case two forms of playback devices are required, so as to keep the music playing continuously. You will need to manage a system that is portable and requires little more than what you carry.
Yet, if you are a permanent DJ at a club or other consistent event, you will have your own console with a turntable, and will thus not have to carry your own playback devices.

If this information for being a music DJ has sparked your imagination, let me say – go for it. It is good money, flexible, and the networking potential is massive.

Good Luck, and have fun!
