Recording Software

Published on 04/12/2007 by Jamie Leger

A Sequencer is the central interface in a computer based Digital Audio Workstation. In addition to being the hosting program that coordinates the gear in a (PC based) *recording studio*, a sequencers primary function is as a *digital multi-track recorder,* and acts as the visual command center for external recording hardware. This *virtual interface* receives the digital signal that is transmitted from an internal or external *sound card*, and is displayed as a waveform in your *edit window*. The digital audio signal is stored into computer memory as a digital audio file. The song file, which is now written to hard disc, can be manipulated using your sequencer's editing tools. The powerful editing capabilities in pro audio sequencers, are made possible through *random access editing*.

Todays professional line of sequencers record, edit, facilitate, audio and *MIDI* tracks side by side. They also control automated mixing parameters, offer powerful sound editing controls, and support "audio processing plugins" as standard features. The power and modest price tag on these music software applications have set a new standard in *music production* and the digital recording studio.

In today's professional sequencers you will find all or most of the below listed feature's.

  •

Automation - The process of automatically controlling fades, panning, track, and master volume levels.

  • Sync recording - Allows the synchronization with external devices. Can act as a slave or as a master.

  • Seem-less editing - Easy manipulation of audio and/or midi tracks. In some cases, editing is as easy as the cut/copy/paste functions of a word document.

  • Time-Stretch - Adjusting the tempo of a recorded song or sample, without changing the pitch or sound quality of the recording.

  • Control Surface Compatibility - Mackie control, HUI, are a couple of the latest control surface protocols. This is a firmware that lives in a hardware device - designed to synchronize music software, and offer hands on control of your recording applications.

The digital audio sequencer is more advanced than ever. and usually includes a number of Plugins, Soft Samplers + Synths, inside the package. This is an added bonus of a continuously competitive market.
