Recording Introduction

Published on 04/12/2007 by Jamie Leger

Outfitted with the bare necessities for audio recording, an excited grin sticks to your face as you prepare the equipment to track your song. In anticipation, you fumble with your acoustic guitar and notepad of barely legible lyrics, while trying to install a demo version of some generic recording software to capture the hit.

Eager to create, you adjust the stand holding a microphone that could probably pass as a cheese grater to the distant eye. You plug the dusty microphone into the audio interface you’ve bought for less than the cost of your last cell phone, and quickly load your software sequencer. Poking at your keyboard - like a caveman in a rocket ship you attempt to make sense out of the unfamiliar menu’s and preferences. Finally, you resort to locating the record button indicator and beginning your latest musical idea.

The last note rings out of your guitar. Refreshingly satisfied, you slowly open your eyes to receive the response of your, well…would be, captivated listeners. Your confident grin slowly shapes into a scowl as you look up and realize your screaming fans are still, only fantasy. Instead, a blank computer screen mocks you in all your newbie-ness. Your frustration begins to snowball as you attempt to playback your captured priceless-ness. Begrudgingly, you-accept your software did not record your three and a half minutes of glory, and realize you must seek knowledge on the tools necessary for recording music.

Well my friend that is a true story I humbly claim ownership to. Needless to say, I underestimated what was involved in making a quality recording. Tail between my legs, I slowly began learning the process and equipment involved in a recording studio.
