Recording Vocals I Tracking “Broadcast Quality” Vocals on a Budget

Posted: January 26th, 2010 | Author: admin | Filed under: Uncategorized | Tags: , , , | 1 Comment »

Hey Folks… Things are extremely busy around here getting ready for the new launch!

So ill just dive in to the tips and techniques… wont be able to spend as much time explaining some things as detailed here.. But here is a great technique for for tracking clean, silky, vocal recordings on a budget, that will get you on your way to recording broadcast quality vocals from your home or project studio. …Get it right AT THE SOURCE!

Here is a fantastic and affordable way to make your vocal recordings sound clean + smooth, allow you to capture silky vocals that are DRY, (not dull) and flexible, and will reduce excessive “bad reflections” and reverberations in your tracking room/area/bedroom.

It might cost you the cost of a couple comforters if you can’t convince your wife that “they will be put to good use…” but chalk up $40-50 bux and get the biggest comforters you can get from target or the like. (if that is too much, you might try browsing a couple thrift shops too.) You’ll also need some way to suspend them from the ceiling. i.e. hanger wire. (so go to home depot or the like after you’ve secured the blankets, and pick up a spool of hanger wire, or whatever your celing situation dictates..

1. buy, find, pull out of your closet; the two biggest comforters you got. (you’ll want em pretty thick too)

2. sem em together. (the short sides)

3. sew thick loops of fabric along the top edge. ( i did about 10…)

4. suspend the blanket from the ceiling using the wire forming a diamond like shape, or two v’s connected …. something like this <>

5. Enjoy! .. play around with the mics placement in there, i guarantee you find some of those, THATS THE SPOT’s!

….Now just record great performances, use effective gain staging, and you’ll track great vocal recordings that take a lot of the grunt work out of fixing poorly recorded vocals.

As always, we love to hear from you

and love to hear your results!

Jamie
